From One Family's Story to a Community Mission: The Story Behind MG Cares
Every meaningful organization has a story, and MG Cares began with a simple realization: military service is never carried by one person alone. Behind every Veteran are spouses, children, parents, and loved ones who make sacrifices that often go unseen. That understanding became the foundation for a mission dedicated to honoring both those who served and the families who stood beside them.
Know Before You Go: Hero's 5K Course & Obstacle Guide
The Hero's 5K features a unique 8-lap course designed to challenge and engage participants. During the first seven laps, runners will encounter an obstacle station each time around. The eighth and final lap is obstacle-free, giving participants a chance to finish strong.
For those looking for a shorter experience, the Jr. GI event covers approximately 1 mile (2 laps) and includes one optional obstacle station before a final obstacle-free
lap. Despite its name, Jr. GI isn't just for kids—it's open to participants of any age who prefer a shorter distance instead of the full 5K.
Whether you're tackling all eight laps or enjoying the one-mile option, the goal is to have fun, challenge yourself at your own pace, and support a great cause.
Running for a Cause: Every Mile Supports the Next Generation
When runners line up for the Heart of the Ozarks Half Marathon, 10K and Mindy’s Run, they aren't only running toward a finish line.
They're helping support the future of running in West Plains, Missouri.
The Heart of the Ozarks event benefits the West Plains Running Club, a charitable foundation with a mission focused on promoting distance running among young people throughout the West Plains area.
That mission gives every mile of this February race a little more meaning.
Building a Love of Running
Running can become much more than a sport.
For young runners, it can provide opportunities to set goals, develop confidence, learn perseverance and discover what they're capable of accomplishing.
The West Plains Running Club wants more area youth to have the opportunity to experience the sport of distance running.
The organizers of Heart of the Ozarks put their mission simply: they love running, they love seeing kids run, and they're dedicated to encouraging young people to participate in the sport.
That's the heart behind the race.
Your Race Can Help Inspire Their Race
Every participant arrives at the starting line with a different story.
Some runners will be attempting their first Half Marathon. Others may be chasing a new personal best in the 10K. Families and community members can also take part through the 2.5-mile Mindy's Run.
But all three events are connected by a common purpose.
By participating in Heart of the Ozarks, runners are supporting an event that benefits an organization working to encourage distance running among local youth.
Today's race participants can help create opportunities and inspiration for tomorrow's runners.
Strengthening the West Plains Running Community
Heart of the Ozarks is also a celebration of the running community that surrounds West Plains.
The race brings together runners from Southern Missouri and across the Midwest for a winter event featuring a challenging-but-fast course, strong race support and a welcoming atmosphere.
Behind that experience is a local organization committed to keeping running strong in the community.
It's a cycle that helps the sport continue to grow:
Runners support the race. The race supports the West Plains Running Club. And the club works to encourage the next generation of runners.
More Than Miles
A finish time eventually becomes a number in a results book. A medal finds a place on a wall. A race shirt becomes a reminder of another starting line and another accomplishment.
But the impact of a race can extend well beyond race day.
That's what makes the Heart of the Ozarks Half Marathon, 10K and Mindy's Run more than another event on the calendar.
It's an opportunity to challenge yourself while supporting a local running community dedicated to introducing young people to the sport.
Run your race. Support their future. Help keep the next generation moving forward.
That's running with heart.
More Than a Finish Line: Why Runners Love Heart of the Ozarks
A great race is about more than the distance on your watch.
It's the excitement at the starting line. The volunteers encouraging you when the miles get tough. The energy around the course. The feeling when you cross the finish line — and, of course, the food waiting afterward.
That's the kind of race-day experience the Heart of the Ozarks Half Marathon, 10K and Mindy's Run works to create each February in West Plains, Missouri.
A Course That Challenges You
If you're looking for a completely flat cruise to the finish, the Missouri Ozarks might have something else in mind.
Heart of the Ozarks combines challenge and speed, giving runners a course where they'll have opportunities to push the pace while still having to earn their finish.
For Half Marathon and 10K participants, that combination can make race day especially rewarding. Whether you're chasing a time, testing your winter fitness or simply trying to reach the finish line, there's plenty to keep the miles interesting.
Race Support That Makes a Difference
Courses don't create memorable races by themselves. People do.
Race organizers place a strong emphasis on course support and atmosphere. Volunteers and supporters help provide the encouragement that can make a huge difference, especially during the later miles of a half marathon.
It's that community involvement that gives Heart of the Ozarks its small-town race personality.
You aren't just another number moving through a massive field. You're running through a community that wants to see you succeed.
The Finish Is Only Part of the Experience
Crossing the finish line deserves to feel like an accomplishment.
Heart of the Ozarks puts an emphasis on the complete participant experience, including race swag and post-race food.
After putting in the training, waking up early on a February morning and tackling the course, runners can celebrate their accomplishment and enjoy the post-race atmosphere with other participants, volunteers, friends and family.
And there's something especially satisfying about hot post-race food after a winter run in the Ozarks.
Three Distances. One Race-Day Atmosphere.
You don't have to run 13.1 miles to experience Heart of the Ozarks.
Participants can choose the Half Marathon, 10K or 2.5-mile Mindy's Run, making the event accessible to runners with different goals and experience levels.
That variety helps create an atmosphere where experienced distance runners, newer runners, families and community members can all share the same race morning.
A Race With a Bigger Purpose
There's another reason this race has heart.
The event benefits the West Plains Running Club, whose mission includes promoting and encouraging distance running among young people in the West Plains area.
That means your race can be about more than your own finish.
You're also supporting a local organization working to help the next generation discover running.
Challenging miles. Incredible support. Great swag. Hot food. Small-town atmosphere. And a finish line with a purpose.
That's why Heart of the Ozarks is more than another February race.
It's a race worth running.
