The 6th annual Birthplace of Route 66 festival is about to roll into downtown Springfield.

On Friday night, the Route 66 Festival starts with a parade of classic cars. Last year over 20,000 people came to the festival over the weekend, and this year that number could double, making it the biggest festival ever downtown.

A record number of classic cars will turn out, well over 400 are preregistered.

That record turnout could spell for a parking nightmare. Here's some tips:

The city has two free parking garages close to each other on Campbell. One at McDaniel is just south of the parade route, and for people coming from the north side of town, there's another free parking garage at Campbell and Olive.

There's also free street parking.

There is a large parking garage at the Springfield visitors center, which can be accessed from Trafficway. Parking there and at most other pay lots will cost you $5 cash only.
