Joplin, MO - The 9/11 Heroes Run 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run was held Saturday, September 8, 2012 across the nation, in efforts to honor the fallen by challenging the living! Joplin, MO was selected to host the 9/11 Heroes Run with proceeds donated directly to the City of Joplin Police Department and the Travis Manion Foundation which is a non-profit organization that directly supports veterans, their families, and families of fallen service members. They do this by providing emergency assistance, scholarships, and other direct financial support when a family or veteran is in need; however, they've found the greatest impact and positive change occurs when the military community is challenged to continue to serve.
The Military rose to the the challenge with newly enlisted and veterans participating in the race. Spectators and participants cheered on the Army, Marines, Navy and Joplin's ROTC as they crossed through the finishline.

Springfield, MO - NAMI Illuminating the Darkness 5K was held Friday, August 24, 2012 at the Forest Institute in Springfield, MO. Since its inception, the "5K Illuminate the Darkness Suicide Prevention Run" presented by NAMI Southwest Missouri has aggressively sought to raise the awareness of attempts and completed suicides in our community. Evidence shows that 7-10 individuals are immediately impacted by the death of a loved one, friend, neighbor, and/or co-worker when an individual completes an act of "suicide". The rate for Missouri is 13 suicides per 100,000 capita while the Greene County rate was 16/100,000 - an unacceptable rate. Participants who ran in this race, helped to support the training that may help a family member, friend, neighbor, and/or co-worker move from an act of despair to one of hopefulness.
